Let’s start with the questions Tripp asks at the end of the devotion:
- What do I really want from God?
- Have I made the purposes of His grace my life purpose?
- Do I want what He wants or am I too easily satisfied?
Those are good questions because they will show where I am on the “mentality” scale. Explanation: I run into trouble with my purpose and contentment and satisfaction based on my mentality. Tripp says there are 5 I can have:
The Consumer Mentality. I shop around to find what meets my needs.
The “Good is Good Enough” Mentality. Satisfaction comes too easily. I settle too quickly. God is always at work in me.
The “This Bad Thing Can Wait” Mentality. I work to make a bad situation good, the best it can be.
The Personal Comfort vs. Personal Holiness Mentality. The latter is difficult; the former one of ease. God’s goodness is judged based on my comfort.
The Event vs Process Mentality. Instant gratification based on the big thing vs. time. The former goes from on big event to another looking for a “high;” the latter is a work in progress.
“Father, help me see Your goodness in all that happens. Help me to not doubt in the tough time. Your goal is to make me into Christ’s image and that takes time. Help me to trust you and give you all the time you need.”
