It is always interesting to look at history, specifically “what happened on this date?” The fact that I like history makes it even more interesting. I decided I would find out what significant events happened and what people celebrate birthdays on October 9th. Here is some of what I found:
- 1871: The Great Chicago Fire, which destroyed over 17,000 buildings and left 100,000 people homeless, was still raging on this day.
- 1963: A landslide at the Vajont Dam in Italy caused a mega-tsunami that destroyed villages and killed approximately 2,000 people.
- 1967: The Marxist revolutionary guerrilla leader Che Guevara was executed by the Bolivian army a day after his capture.
- 1910: A coal dust explosion at the Starkville Mine in Colorado killed 56 miners.
Wow! Don’t those all give you the “warm fuzzies?” 🙂 So here are some celebrities who celebrate(d) birthdays on this date:
- Tony Shalhoub
- Scott Bakula
- Sharon Osbourne
- John Lennon
- Jackson Browne
- Anika Sorenstam
- Sean Lennon
- Lecrae
- Bill Grandi
Wait! That last one doesn’t fit that list. Unless one believes he is a legend in his own mind. 🙂 🙂 Trust me when I say I am not THAT delusional. Except for the late John Lennon and Jackson Browne I am the oldest on that list. Sharon Osbourne is the same age, but since she was born in the UK I’m guessing she is technically older by 6 hours or so.
Going back in history can be fun. Sometimes it is a good thing to do. Someone has said, “Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” God was constantly reminding the Israelites of their history. In fact, the psalmist did that several times. Parents were told to tell the stories to their children of God’s faithfulness as they trekked through the wilderness for 40 years. Revisionist history has done a great disservice to the young people of our country due to mixed up, revised, and forgotten history.
But the most important fact about history? God is who He said He is and has always been faithful, even in and through the tough times. That is a fact of history I never want to forget.
{Note: Jo thought it would be a great birthday present for me to take her to see Braden, Cameron-his “girl”friend” (a term he told his dad was so ’80s)- our daughter, Janna, and her beau, Mike. Yes, you read that right: “a good birthday present for me.” 🙂 That means I will be traveling today to Ohio. Prayers are appreciated} And I apologize for the look of this post. I have absolutely no clue what happened to the format. What I see here in the original is not what is posted.

Happy Birthday, Bill, and safe travels!!! The format looks fine on my end of the computer, by the way.
Blessings!
Thanks Martha. There are no paragraph breaks after the birthday list on mine. who knows?
Happy birthday Bill, enjoy your visit, and I will be praying for safe travels.
Thanks Gail. Prayers are appreciated.
Happy Birthday Bill, Praying for a safe trip. Remembering the past is not bad, forgetting the past usually results in repeating it.
Thanks for the wishes and prayers Ryan. Thanks for further clarifying my thoughts.
Happy birthday, Bill! Sharing a birthday with John Lennon makes you an almost-Beatle!
Thanks Glynn. But my height puts me a bit too tall for a Beatle. 🙂
