Psalm 55 talks about a seeming end to friendship brought on by betrayal. Verses 12-15 seem to especially emphasize that point. It is you “a man, my equal,  my companion, my familiar friend.”

G. Campbell Morgan wrote this: “The true quality of friendship is love, and the one expression of perfect friendship is that of adherence, loyalty, or…one who ‘sticketh closer than a brother.’ Pr.18:24

The heart of man is forever craving friendship. Let every man beware of the crowd of acquaintances. Let every man value at the very highest the friend who is a true lover. It is a little difficult in June days to distinguish between the acquaintance and the friend. We have to wait for November and December. It is not easy to know your friends when the sea is smooth and reflects heaven’s blue. You will find them when the sky is overcast…and you are in peril.” (p.49)

There are a lot of people who call people friends. We hug and say, “Good to see you my friend” or “Love you my friend” or some variation of “my friend.” But as G.C.M has stated friends are found in adversity. That’s because true friendship is found when the chips are down.

I just finished watching The Greatest Showman Friday afternoon. It was the first time in quite awhile. The last song “From Now On” talks about his foray into the high life only to find his true friends were at home all along. He got sidetracked by the light and finally found his way back home.

“Father, may I not be captured or enamored by the light of men’s applause or ‘a better life.’ May I find my true friendship in You. Help me also to sort out who are my friends and who are my acquaintances.”

  1. Yes, true friends stick with you and by you no matter what the circumstances. And they are few and far between . . .
    Blessings, Bill, and Happy Sunday!

We are all prone to wander, attached by the big, bright lights. And I think “From Now On” is my favorite song from The Greatest Showman.

I agree Glynn. Prone to wander seems to be the battle of my life. It’s a toss up between this one and “This is the Greatest Show” for my favorite.

I couldn’t agree with you more. When people are in a bind is when they find out who their true friends are. I obviously believe that friends, when bound together by God, have a bond with God Himself as the third cord in the spiritual rope that binds.

  4. Ryan S. says:

Good to know the difference between friends and acquaintances . Not only from the perspective of how others are around me… but how I am around those I count as friends. Also good to know how I am in regards to my relationship to God… Am i merely a fair weather friend, a call you when I need you friend, or a call on you because I value you type of friend.
