February 12

We often hear the phrase “Love people; use things.” I think it goes without saying that we more commonly are guilty of “Love things; use people.”

In the Old Testament there is a story in I Sam. 4 when Eli was High Priest. The Israelites were going to fight the Philistines and thought they would take the Ark of the Covenant into battle with them and by doing so it would guarantee victory. Eli okayed it, then sat with bated breath in Shiloh awaiting word. Word came alright. His 2 sons, Hopni and Phinehas were killed, and the Ark was captured. Eli fell backwards and died.

Using God or using His Ark like a talisman was not in the cards. The Ark was not a talisman one could use or wear (like a cross or medal) to guarantee victory. Too many people-self included-sometimes act toward God like He is a good luck charm. God is to be worshiped, not used. He is Lord, not a four-leaf clover. He is more than a cross hanging around a neck or bracelet on a wrist. He is worthy of our praise, and is much more than a name to be uttered (sometimes in blasphemy). He is so much more than “Oh my God!” or “Oh, my Lord!” The name of Jesus is a powerful Name, a majestic Name, a holy Name.

Don’t use Him. Worship Him. Love Him; use things. (And if you want to see a perfect response take a moment to read Luke 7:36-50 about the woman who anoints Jesus with oil, washes His feet with her tears and then takes grief from a “religious” person. And take note of Jesus’ words to her and to the “religious” person).

  1. Use things, not people – I’ve heard that many times, Bill. And we most certainly and especially should NEVER use God as though He was on the same playing field. Worship, praise and adoration of Him and all He has done should be our focus each and every moment. Thanks so much for this reality check this morning.
    Blessings!

Father, You are the only true God, and You alone are worthy of all praise, glory and honor. Anytime that I ever put anything in front of You, or, or I stand in my own arrogance believing my flesh over my renewed mind, I stand in repentance. Father it is by Your grace alone that I am honored to be called a child of God. I was redeemed by You, for You, to live a life of service to You.
